A root vegetable that originated as a cross between the cabbage and the turnip, first cultivated in the 1600s in Sweden. Has the texture of a potato, with more flavor. Traditionally mashed with potatoes. Since early Halloween festivals in Ireland and Scotland, rutabagas have been carved out and used as like jack-o'-lanterns.
